Sometimes, we think we are so advanced, that we know more than those who preceded us. In science and information, that’s probably true. In wisdom and knowledge about living, probably not. From the Bible and the words of Jesus to Greek and Roman philosophers, to Confucius and Buddha, great wisdom has been handed down to us. Here is but a sampling of that wisdom.
“Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws.” - Plato
“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted” - Aesop
“True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us.” - Socrates
“Wisdom begins in wonder.” - Socrates
“Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.” - Aristotle
“By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.” - Confucius
“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” - Confucius
“Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule.” - Buddha
“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you.” - Jesus, recorded in the Book of Matthew 7:12
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these." - Jesus, recorded in Matthew 12:30-31
“I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it.” - Groucho Marx
